Ristorante Isola Verde wittelsheim

A lovely, quiet, shaded terrace at the back of the restaurant. They offer homemade pasta dishes and pizzas. I'm deducting one star to encourage the chef to offer less conventional dishes and experiment with unusual flavor combinations (like savory/fruit).

An unforgettable experience, treated like royalty, and without a reservation. The food was top-notch, worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant. The waitress, waiter, and owner were exceptionally friendly. I highly recommend this place.

We were a table of six. Three of us were a little disappointed with the portion sizes and presentation of the dishes. For the others, the pasta and pizza were fine. A suggestion: try working on the bruschetta; it was far too simple and not flavorful enough. For the carpaccio, a little more olive oil or offer it at the table would be nice. The service was good.

Okay, but beware of the wine bill (between 6 and 8 times the purchase price). We were there with friends one evening; it was my first visit. The terrace was closed due to the weather, so we ate inside: the dining room is very noisy, making conversation a bit difficult. The service is (very) informal but friendly. The only real downside concerns the wine prices. We didn't expect a carafe of rosé in a pizzeria in Wittelsheim to cost €25. We made the huge mistake of not checking the price of the wine that was recommended to us on the wine list. Out of curiosity, I did some research: The "Terre di Marca" rosé (Veneto) was charged at €25 for 50 cl (€23 on the online wine list), for a wine whose purchase price for a restaurant is around €5-6 per bottle, meaning a markup of more than 6 (on the bottle). The "Greg & Juju" rosé (Pays d'Oc) is an entry-level wine, purchased for around €3.50 and resold for just under €20 per 50cl carafe (the online menu isn't up to date), a markup of approximately 8 times. What's even more surprising is that the price of the 50cl carafe is almost the same as the price of the bottle (around 15% cheaper)... we really should have checked the menu! These are markups far exceeding what's usually charged in restaurants (3 to 4 times). It's a shame because we left feeling ripped off. We shared our feelings with the staff, who were offended... the owner wasn't there.
